  1. What are the computer requirements for an online class?
That depends on which classes you would like to take. If you are interested in taking basic general classes you will need a Pentium class PC or G3 or higher MAC and a 56K modem and connection to the Internet through an ISP.

If you are interested in pursuing one of our graphics courses, we recommend:
    • Color flatbed scanner
    • Color inkjet printer
    • Digital camera
    • Drawing tablet

    In addition, online students need:
    • A standard set of software applications which will allow them to complete their assignments and prepare them to use the same software, as well as compatible software, on the job.
    • A connection to the Internet through phone lines using the 56k modem.
    • Except for materials required to produce hand-worked art, all assignments and projects within the class are designed to be accomplished using the technology described above without requiring students to purchase or otherwise obtain additional equipment or services.

  2. Who takes online classes?
Anyone enrolled with The Art Institute Online can take classes. With The Art Institute Online, a division of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, you will have the added benefit of learning together with students from many of The Art Institute schools nationwide. Students from around the country - even around the world - may be in the same class.

  3. Will there be an instructor for the class or are these self-study classes?
There will be an instructor for each of our classes. Instructors will be actively involved in all of your course work, leading discussions, giving assignments, grading and taking attendance.

  4. How much time does an online class require?
Most of our classes are designed so that you can participate anytime - day or night - seven days a week. Most classes require that you participate five out of seven days in a week, but you choose the days. Most students spend a minimum of 12 hours per week and an average of two to three hours each of those five days reading notes, preparing assignments, responding to discussions, etc. Some graphic design courses may require more design time.

  5. Can I get financial aid for online courses?
Yes, financial aid is available in the form of loans and grants if you meet all of the eligibility requirements. For more information, please contact The Art Institute Online.

  6. How long are the online classes?
Our online classes are six weeks in length. Each class will have a set beginning and ending date. We synchronize our online classes with our on-ground schools' quarterly cycle, which is 11 weeks in length. We run two six-week sessions within the 11-week quarter, so the online classes between Session I and Session II will overlap by a week.

  7. Where do I get textbooks?
Textbooks for all of our courses are available for purchase through our partnership with Varsity Books - our textbook supplier. You will be able to purchase your textbook online and have it delivered to your doorstep.

  8. How many students are in a class?
Typically classes will range from 15-20 students. This allows the instructor to provide individualized attention to each student.

  9. Will I need special software to take an online class?
You will need a web browser to take any class. Some courses will require special software. We have a link on our Virtual Campus to our software provider where students can purchase the necessary software at a special student price. We also have a selection of complete hardware and software packages needed to complete our programs at special student prices.

  10. What happens if I have technical difficulties during a class?
We will provide support for the virtual classroom software on a 24 x 7 basis. This means you can call an 800 number 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and get help. If you have purchased one of our complete hardware and software packages we will provide support for any problems. If you are using your own equipment, it will be your responsibility to have it repaired.

  11. Can I just take one class online?
You can take one class or sign up for an entire degree or diploma program. Some classes will have pre-requisites and some will require you to take some software training prior to taking the class. You must be continuously enrolled for at least 6 course credits per quarter to receive most types of aid.

  12. How much does an online class cost?
Currently, our online courses are $1,110 per course, plus a $100 online lab fee. This fee allows you access to the classroom software and will also provide you with the required training for the software mentioned above.
