- What are the computer requirements for an online class?
To access all courses, you must have no less than a 56K connection to the Internet. In addition, you will need, at a minimum, a Pentium-class PC or a G4 or higher Macintosh computer.
You will need a Web browser to take any class and some courses will also require special software. For example, General Education courses may only require the use of basic word processing or office productivity software, while our program-specific courses may require the use of particular hardware and software for the completion of course assignments. Our online Course Catalog lists the specific software requirements for any course.
- Who takes online classes?
Anyone enrolled with The Art Institute Online can take classes. With
The Art Institute Online, a division of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh,
you will have the added benefit of learning together with students from
many of The Art Institute schools nationwide. Students from around the
country - even around the world - may be in the same class.
- Will there be an instructor for the class or are these self-study classes?
Each class has an instructor who is actively involved in the coursework by leading discussions, giving and grading assignments, and guiding students to higher levels of achievement. Instructors also provide real-world expertise that complements course material and presents a more comprehensive perspective for students.
- How much time does an online class require?
As a student, you will be required to actively participate in class at least five days each week; however, you can choose the particular time of day when you attend. With each course, you can expect to spend approximately 15 hours per week with study activities - which includes time participating in class as well as time spent reading, writing, researching and completing assignments.
- Can I get financial aid for online courses?
Yes, financial aid is available in the form of loans and grants if you meet all of the eligibility requirements. For more information, please contact The Art Institute Online.
- How long are the online classes?
Our online classes are six weeks in length. Each class will have a set beginning and ending date. We synchronize our online classes with our on-ground schools' quarterly cycle, which is 11 weeks in length. We run two six-week sessions within the 11-week quarter, so the online classes between Session I and Session II will overlap by a week.
- Where do I get textbooks?
Textbooks for all of our courses are available for purchase through our partnership with MBS Direct - our textbook supplier. You will be able to purchase your textbook online and have it delivered to your doorstep.
- How many students are in a class?
Class size is approximately 15 students - which allows the instructor to provide individualized attention to each student.
- Will I need special software to take an online class?
Some courses will require special software. Through our online campus, you'll find a link to our software provider - where students can purchase the necessary software at a special student price.
- What happens if I have technical difficulties during a class?
A toll-free helpline is always available for students who are having problems accessing class or interacting with course materials. Assistance with other technical issues may be found within the online classroom, or can be obtained outside of the classroom during normal business hours.
- Can I just take one class online?
You can take one class or sign up for an entire degree or diploma program. Some classes will have pre-requisites and some will require you to take some software training prior to taking the class. You must be continuously enrolled for at least 6 course credits per quarter to receive most types of aid.
- How much does an online class cost?
Currently, our online courses are $1,110 per course, plus a $100 online lab fee. This fee allows you access to the classroom software, and will also provide you with optional training for software programs that you will use for your classes.
